Sally Hayter Physiotherapy
Services: Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a treatment using very fine needles. These are inserted at particular acupuncture points on the body that have been found to stimulate response and relieve the symptoms of a number of physical and psychological conditions. It aims to help the body to heal naturally.
Over the last 100 years of Physiotherapy, treatment techniques have evolved and adapted. The number of patients and conditions that can be treated has increased. This has included using some techniques that have been previously classed as 'complimentary' therapies. The most commonly used therapy, acupuncture.
Acupuncture therapy is now well researched and links well with the core philosophy and practices of the Physiotherapy profession as a whole. Having been around for over 3000 years in China it is one of the oldest recorded forms of medicine.
The therapeutic effect is thought to be due to the nervous system being stimulated to produce its own painkilling substances. These substances are to be found locally around the needle, in the spinal cord, and in different areas of the brain. The effects are cumulative, so the normal length of treatment will be between 6 and 12 sessions. Chartered Physiotherapists often combine techniques to achieve the best results for their patients. Acupuncture is a treatment option but often is used to compliment other skills to provide a 'holistic' effect.
The AACP monitors the standards of training and practice offered by Physiotherapists. Please see their website for further details.
